The Gigafactory of Tesla Motors produces lithium ion batteries, which support the electric car manufactured by the automaker. Also, the Gigafactory provides low-cost batteries to the electric car making giant by using alternative energy sources. In a recent video, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Tesla, Elon Musk, said that hundred gigafactories can power the entire world.

Gigafactory to reach full capacity by 2018: Musk

Earlier this year, Musk and Leonardo DiCaprio met at the Gigafactory to talk about renewable resources and the future of energy in relation to climate change. Mr. DiCaprio is already seen and recorded talking about similar subjects and hence, he is no stranger to climate change or renewable resources and alternative energy. Recently, Mr. DiCaprio used his first Oscar acceptance speech as a opportunity to talk about the grave realities of warming planet and climate change.

In the video, the CEO of Tesla was quoted as saying, “We actually did the calculations to figure out what it would take to transition the whole world to sustainable energy. You’d need 100 Gigafactories.” The main goal of the Gigafactory is to reach net zero energy and keep maintaining it. According to Musk, the Gigafactory will reach full capacity by 2018 and will produce more lithium ion batteries yearly than they produced all over the world in 2013.

Musk’s Gigafactory is further aiming to continue to decrease the price of these batteries, make them more affordable for mid-stream customers and financially incentivize the use of alternative energy sources.

Solar Cells are the renewable energy sources of future

In the video, when the Hollywood star and climate change expert enters the factory, he is astonished by the sleek efficiency. He exclaims, “Holy crap, that’s a good robot.” Musk and he then start talking, with the former underlining that the sooner they can take action, the less harm will result to man-man climate change.

Musk says the sun does not shine all the time so they have to store it in a battery and if they are able to shift to renewable and alternative energy sources, they could avoid building all electricity plants. The solar cells made by SolarCity (which Tesla acquired last year) and other solar energy companies are more efficient than ever.

The researchers – inspired by photosynthesis – have recently combined the principles of biology and quantum physics to improve the capabilities of solar energy. Alternative energy is – no doubt – the future of energy.  People will not and cannot progress without solar energy. The alternative energy sources are becoming more and more powerful and possible option with each passing day. If the low costing and green batteries assist in supporting a future where alternative energy is the majority, then these Gigafactories could undoubtedly be one of the many steps in the right direction.
