On Monday, the Chief Executive Officers from Amazon, Google, Apple and other top tech companies will be meeting with President Donald Trump for the first American Technology Council meeting. This proves the tech CEOs need to be at the council meeting even if they do not agree with Trump’s Policies.
What will happen at the meeting?
The major topic at the meeting will be to plan a strategy to update federal computer systems and find a way to guard against cyber-attacks. Even though several chief executives do not agree with the policies of the U.S. President Donald Trump, they will be present at the meeting. Attendance to the meeting, as expected, will be very important, even if the views of the CEOs do not align with the policies of Donald Trump.
Tim Cook, the Chief Executive Officer of Apple Inc., said in an interview to CNBC in May that he thinks the worst-case scenario would be not showing up for the meeting. He added, saying “Because then you’re quiet and this doesn’t do your cause any good, or your point of view any good.”
Satya Nadella (the Chief Executive Officer of Microsoft), Jeff Bezos (the Chief Executive Officer of Amazon) and other important leaders from Google Parent Alphabet, MasterCard, and Oracle will be showing up for the meeting as well.
The tech group is anticipated to meet for a few hours and bring their conclusions up for discussion with the President. In addition to this, the five-day summit will try to tackle problems like making government services sites easier to use and more user-friendly.
Ex-President Obama did the same in his time
If you think these concerns are new, then you are mistaken. U.S. President Barack Obama attempted to update systems during his time in the White House as well. Some agencies relay on programming language from the 1950s and “obsolete” parts, according to a report from the U.S. Government Accountability Office.
According to the news outlet ‘The Wall Street Journal’, a memo, which was sent to the tech leaders before the meeting, said that applying for government benefits should be as easy as depositing a check on your phone. Chris Liddell, current assistant to the U.S. President Donald Trump and former Microsoft executive, will be leading the effort in the White House with help from Jared Kushner, who runs the newly created White House Office of American Innovation.
In an interview to reporters, where he discussed the conference, Liddell said that their systems are in some cases 10 to 20 years out of date. According to the Wall Street Journal, he said “So we’re not going to fix that in one day. But we want to start now. And this day will be a significant one in terms of generating ideas and potential solutions to the problems.”
