The $300 million funding round, which was first reported in the month of June this year by several news sites and blogs, has finally been confirmed by smartphone making company Essential. The smartphone maker that is founded by Android co-creator Andy Rubin has made the $300 million funding official to public.
When is the launch date of Essential phone? Even the President is confused
The funding round is coming from investors including Amazon’s Alexa Fund and Tencent, among others. The smartphone maker disclosed new information about the retail launch of the much-awaited smartphone as well. In addition to this, the smartphone making company disclosed that retail partners like BestBuy and Amazon will be carrying the smartphone in the United States.
However, the launch date of the smartphone is still not clear – the President of the smartphone maker Niccolo De Masi said in an interview to the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday that the smartphone is still “a few weeks away”, however, he also said that the smartphone maker will provide an exact date “in a week.” In the United States, the Essential phone has a release exclusivity deal with carrier Sprint and in Canada, it has previously announced availability via Telus.
To the Wall Street Journal, De Masi said that the future international carrier options would be announced later this year. The smartphone startup is challenging several smartphone making companies, including the Silicon Valley giant Apple and South-Korea based- smartphone maker Samsung, with its amazing design and premium placement, however, it does not look like the company is planning to challenge the smartphone makers in terms of sales in the coming future.
Essential phone could be similar to iPhone 8
The smartphone making company will consider low single digit million sales for year one “very successful’, given that the smartphone maker is still a new startup, said the President of Essential. The total funding of the smartphone maker is at $330 million now and according to estimations of private co. share marketplace Equidate, its total valuation is at $1 billion.
The smartphone making startup has not disclosed any official figures yet so nothing can be said as of now. The smartphone of Essential will be available unlocked at retail through carriers Telus and Sprint as well as via Best Buy, Essential.com and Amazon. The company has already generated a lot of hype in the tech industry through its upcoming Android-based smartphone and its unique design that maximizes the screen area of the device and lastly its founder Andy Rubin.
According to leaks, the phone may look similar to the iPhone 8. Other smartphone making giant are also following the same path and making phones that reveal screen -heavy prototypes with minimal bezels.
